@magpie ultimately I think the only thing they would consider vital would be staying in power

@sean You've got a point there. The "great moral challenge" and the RSPT fiasco.

@magpie other than supply, I don't know what would be so vital that they would go to the polls, unless they were confident of a victory. After all, the "greatest moral challenge of our time" wasn't vital enough!

@sean Any basic, introductory (kinda "Modal Logic for Dummies") resources on the net on that topic?

@michaeltstrss76 not really the idea of this place

@sean If it was vital for them, they might be forced to.

@magpie absolutely I could see that happen, but that wouldn't be enough to go to an election unless Labor wanted to

@sean I know. But that's not what I was asking. Let me put it this way: can you conceive any scenario where the 3 Amigos would side with the Coalition in the House against a law projected vital to Labor?

@magpie all I can claim is a passing familiarity with modal logic. I get the impression it is more the domain of philosophers than mathematicians these days.

@magpie Abbott cannot force a return to the polls, unless someone peels away from supporting the Govt on supply and confidence motions

@sean Hey Stubborn, let me ask you something as a mathematician: are you good at modal logic?

@sean I see what you mean. A Greens/Labour alliance could, by themselves, approve laws at the Senate, but at the House the situation is more complex: the 3 Amigos + Wilkie didn't promise support. Could Abbott push Labor to a double dissolution?

@sean Well, I think that the prediction that the Govt is going to have a hard time is quite safe: just a continuation of what happened since Abbott took charge. But, it will make it to 2013?

@magpie it will be an interesting 3 years. I think that the Govt will survive and some legislation will get through (eg NBN), but some things will be a struggle.
