  1. @magpie LOL I didn't make that connection. I think it would have been in the 1890s but it's a question still worth asking @stableboy?

  2. @sean I've thought about this since the 2000 US election - it seems too close to be a coincidence. I suspect there is a Game Theory explanation. Alternatively we are part of some higher order reality tv program. Srsly.

  3. Of course if the parties had identical policies then we'd pretty much expect 50:50. Oh, I see.

  4. It's odd that a number of elections recently have been so very close to 50:50. This is what we'd expect if everyone was tossing coins or the choice of parties was essentially random like people preferring blue or red.

  5. @magpie tho in order to establish legal principle of ownership of resources involves a large number of politicians and lawyers which must be an entropy increasing activity ;)

  6. @magpie well natural resources only have value because they will be turned into something which will increase entropy but it is an interesting point that value can exist prior to use.

  7. @magpie it strikes me that wealth creation always involves a decrease in local entropy but there must be an even larger increase in entropy universally.

  8. @magpie yes wealth can disappear - look at the Fall of the Roman Empire. Or more prosaically just leave a cake out in the rain.

  9. @magpie I think you start with a two person economy and see how that works then add a third who does nothing but intermediate ie a banker.

  10. @magpie I'm glad you finally accept that I was right on whatever it was we didn't previously agree.

  11. @magpie This is only possible if provider of finance is in thick with developer ie new developments. But I saw ads offering this post GFC!

  12. @magpie - of course worse thing was saying they would pay "deposit" so if apartment cost $110k, say, they wld pay $10k deposit so banks wld lend $100k on 90% LVR (stop it pedants). Of course that apartment was only worth $100k T+1 as they found out when they tried to resell.

  13. @magpie - for example apartments were built with no storage to save space and they used small furniture to make spaces look bigger. No doubt booze, hard sell, good looking agents etc made no difference.

  14. @magpie - in UK developers built apartment blocks no one would actually want to move into. Convinced secretary investors from London they could buy into the flipping dream. Up to Manchester on bus, bit of booze, buy now love or it will be gone. Only seems dumb in hindsight.

  15. @sean it's not like they were being asked to write about the discovery of supersymmetric particles at CERN.

  16. @sean or that only a qualified economist can be expected to understand arguments about economics or finance. Tho the example GG used was release of Coalition policy on student disability allowance where no journo asked who would qualify which is hardly economics.

  17. @sean he seems to have kicked up some much needed controversy about reporting in this campaign as the post was reproduced on Crikey and mentioned elsewhere. Keane's defense of journalistic ignorance on matters economic is pathetic but interesting. !politics
